Picturesque Porto

If you ever find yourself in Porto, head to the water ASAP. Either the Atlantic Ocean

or the Rio Douro will do. It’s a picturesque city from the water.

John and I did the whirlwind tour of Porto today — by foot, tour bus and boat. And without question, the city is loveliest when seen from the water. Which isn’t to say the innards of the coastal town aren’t interesting. Porto has its share of monuments…

and history.

But the views from off shore are best as the city comes alive with color when seen from a distance.

When you’re not admiring the waterfront view, try the food. I sampled some grilled calamari for lunch today while John chose a town favorite –franceshina. It’s ham, beef and cheese smothered in a special sauce. Quite tasty!

We also squeezed in a tour of a port cave, Calem, which included a tasting session, of course. I prefer the sweeter, white port which still carries a kick as port is 20 percent alcohol.

Porto is definitely a prime tourist destination. Throughout the day, we met some lovely couples from around the globe — Belgium, England, Australia and Canada. Hard to beat good conversation, food and wine — and we found all three here in picturesque Porto.
