There are about 14 varieties of tulips in Turkey. Tulips populated Turkey long before they made it to Holland. The Turks do love their tulips and who can blame them?
John and I went to Yildiz Park today to enjoy the tulips on a beautiful, sunny day. The area was a forest in Byzantine times, then a hunting ground for Suleiman the Magnificent. In the 19th century, Yildiz Palace was constructed and the park became part of the imperial garden.
Today, it’s one of the largest public parks in Istanbul. It’s where locals go to exercise, take a break from city life, and tiptoe through the tulips.
