The Salt Mines

The third time is definitely the charm.

Yesterday, we went to tour an ice cave only to discover it was closed until May 1. This morning we headed to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. It too was closed; though I could see it perched atop a snowy peak. Can you?

After lunch, we ventured to Salzwelten (salt mines) near Hallein and — yes– it was open! We, along with our friends Dan and Kim Jape, were outfitted like salt miners…

before we straddled a little mine train to enter the oldest mine in the world open to the public. The Celts first mined here in 400 BC.

We moved between levels in the mine by sliding down wooden slides, then across a small lake aboard a big raft.

A lot of fun, but I was glad to be above ground to enjoy the spectacular day.
