The Tall One

Koyukon Athabaskans revere Mt. McKinley as “Deenaalee” — the Tall One. image

The name is fitting since the mountain is the tallest one in North America at 20,320 feet.

This shot of the mountain was taken at Mary Carey’s McKinley View Lodge a few miles south of Denali National Park. Mary was a Georgian from Chatsworth who ventured alone to Alaska in 1954 after the death of her husband. She founded the lodge and lived there until her death in 2004.

The park offers one amazing vista after another.
